Charity Begins at....Milngavie
"Charity begins at home" or at least so goes the old saying. However each year for hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, of people setting off on a sponsored walk of the West Highland Way, charity begins at Milngavie.
No one has ever calculated just how much money sponsored West Highland Way walkers raise for charity. We know however that the amount is well supplemented by others who walk or cycle John o’ Groats/Land’s End or the Coast to Coast challenge or take part in one of the many organised Munro-bagging fundraisers.

Last year we reckon we had hundreds of visitors staying at By The Way who were walking or cycling (including one pictured on the right tackling the Groat's End run on a unicycle) for some good cause or other. The group shown above raised a whopping twenty seven thousand pounds for Alzheimer's Disease (as far as we know the largest amount raised by a single group).

The picture to the right shows a group of Inverness Caledonian Thistle fans (i.e. SuperCaleyfragilisticexpialidocious?) who walk to their teams last away match every football season and at the same time raise some money for a local charity.

If you are planning to walk the West Highland Way consider using the trip to help some needy charity. Most charities will supply you with sponsor forms and may throw in a few appropriate T-shirts as well.
When you complete the walk let us know who you walked for and how much you raised. We will add your details to our website (and our campsite "Seen it, done it, raised the money" Charities board).
Few would disagree that successfully completing the West Highland Way makes you feel good. We have no doubt that successfully completing the Way and at the same time helping others makes you feel even better. Go on, try it!
